Winter Re-Run :: The Welding: Bride's Song - I'll Cut You if You Cut and Run

As promised, some documentary footage from the alternative wedding I helped produce and direct with my now-welded-together-forever pals Carol and Steve.

The song -- "I'll Cut You if You Cut and Run" -- was written by Carol and me - the bride's lyrics to my music - and was played by Brooklyn's Hungry March Band the day following the blackout of August 2003.

What a beautiful nightmare it was.

More footage from "The Welding" perhaps forthcoming. This serves as part of the collection of sketch /trailer footage I've made toward producing "The World's Longest Open Love Letter" film.

Wish me luck.

Again.

When I boot up my phone it says, "Try Again," which are words captured from inside a bottle top by an artist whom I know by the name of H.D. I bought the print from her. Perhaps it's time to hang the art collection. Again.

"Try Again."

I'm just saying.

POST NOTE: Re-posting this because I can and need to see it again.

Dealing with Control Freaks

Everybody's got at least one. Wishing us all luck @ the holidays.

Control Freak Coping Strategies
:

  • Stay as calm as you can. Control freaks tend to generate a lot of tension in those around them. Try to maintain a comfortable distance so that you can remain centered while you speak with them. Try to focus on your breathing. As they get more agitated and demanding, just breath slowly and deeply. If you stay calm and focused, this often has the effect of relaxing them as well. If you get agitated you have joined the battle on their terms.

  • Speak very slowly. Again the normal tendency is to gear up and speak rapidly when dealing with a control freak. This will only draw you into the emotional turmoil and you will quickly be personalizing what is occurring.

  • Be very patient. Control freaks need to feel heard. In fact, they do not have that much to say. They have a lot to say if you engage them in a power struggle. If you just listen carefully and ask good questions that indicate that you have heard them, then they will quickly resolve whatever the issue is and calmly move on.

  • Pay attention to your induced reactions. What is this person trying to emotionally induce in you? Notice how you feel when speaking with them. It will give you important clues as to how to deal with them more effectively and appropriately.

  • Initially, let them control the agenda. But you control the pacing. If you stay calm and speak slowly, you will be in command of the pacing of the conversation.

  • Treat them with kindness. Within most control freaks is a good measure of paranoia. They are ready to get angry and defend against what they perceive is a controlling hostile world. If you treat them with respect and kindness, their paranoia cannot take root. You will jam them up.

  • Make demands on them-- especially when dealing with the type 2 control freak. Ask them to send you something or do something for you. By asking something of them, you will be indicating that you are not intimidated or diminished by their behavior patterns.

  • Remember an old but poignant Maxim: “Those who demand the most often give the least.”

Dutch Apple Pancakes :: Cookin' for One

Cooking for one doesn't have to suck. No indeed. I used gala apples for the recipe shown; nicely sweet and soft after baking. The original recipe calls for one to peel the apples. I don't. For the nutrition and color.

This is great for lunch right out of the oven - hot - and served in a bowl with a little milk.

The next day it's great - again warmed - for 10 minutes @ 300° in the toaster oven. Just enough to take the chill off and crisp the sugar-glazed "crust".

Preheat oven to 400°

3 Grannie Smith Apples - cored & sliced thin, are sautéed 5 minutes over medium high heat in ovenproof pan with:

2T butter
1/4 C sugar
1 t. cinnamon

Mix together to create lovely batter consistency:

3 eggs
1/2C milk
1/2C flour
1 T. sour cream
1/4 t. salt
1 t. grated lemon zest

Bake 25 minutes for golden-brown goodness that makes the house smell like home.

Music: Makin' Pies from Pattry Griffin's "1000 Kisses" album. One of my faves of all time.

CBC's Big Sugar - Part 2

Hmmm. They never taught us this history in school. Wonder why.

More questions: why in heaven's name is big sugar subsidized with U.S. taxpayer money? How much annually is given to big sugar? Under what circumstances? What legislators support this subsidy?

The CBC has lots of great documentary films on Google.

45 minutes.

Pangea Day

This Pangea Day seems like something the vlogosphere could get behind. It seems like something *I could get behind anyway, and I begin to recut The Faux Parade for that purpose.

Found this through my subscription to TED [RSS Feed] that has become one of my favorite entertainment diversions in the last months.

Want to say I hope they'll release their trailer (and submitted films) into the wild rather than trussing 'em up in Flash, and include RSS feeds and a blog / vlog.

Re-vlog :: Not Buying It :: Consumerism & Promises

Re-vlogging Michael Krasny's interview with Judith Levine, author of Not Buying It: My Year Without Shopping.

I like promises and work with them a lot. As a person-with-depression I tend not to keep promises when in the middle of a dark time, and making promises helps me discover strategies with which to overcome that propensity.

Judith Levine made a promise not to shop for a year; this book is the result.

My consumer-related promise is simple, too: I can buy anything I like so long it is a creative tool.

My diet plan: I can eat any calorie-busting thing I like so long as I cook it - a device that also served as inspiration to cook better for myself.

Both commitments serve me well.

Began in 1995 to live a modified ascetic life. Still do.

This relates to Faux Press' current motto: "Pay More". But I'm not sure exactly how it relates.

Any ideas?

Faux Parade :: The Princess & The Man of Her Dreams :: Click.tv Test #3

Been working with the fabulous Click.tv team to troubleshoot a bit of an issue. Happily, they got a previously problematic timecode-based comment post using their free service up and jumping in a couple of days. Beta testing is demanding but rewarding work. Mostly, love seeing the results of the back and forth.

Thanks, Click! Working fine...

_____
POST NOTE: The java-based code generated didn't work in Blogger Alpha, tho it used to work in Beta if I overrode the error message. What you see above is Click's 'alternative code' solution that doesn't support the 'email' function. Getting closer :)

Here's the original, java-based code for comparison:

_____
POST-POST NOTE: Hrm. Now both bits of code appear to work. Go figure.

Best possible outcome for Click anyway.

Cheers!

Documentary Film Making Tool :: Click TV :: Digital Workflow :: Interview Strategy

Did I mention Click.tv?

Yeah. I've mentioned 'em before.

Lanza's the guy.

The workflow has inspired me to collect the filmworks from "The World's Longest Open Love Letter", run 'em through Blip.tv and Click.tv and here @ the Blogger site. This will hopefully help to find the voiceovers in the text and timing of it. Notes.

Perhaps this is a way in which ad-hoc directors among you might be able to field questions for the interview footage that needs to be recorded to stitch the aggregated performance pieces into a cohesive filmwork. A documentary. An art documentary. The next major project that fills the days.

Wonder how this Click.tv flash interface will translate over at Mefeedia. Hmmm. If it translates, I can collect the films over there. In a Mefeedia Collection.

From the pespective of the documentary-as-healing and giving-backness.

Who wants to play?

Find I cannot ask myself the right questions.

Will you help me find the right questions?

Pretty please.

Don't make me beg.

_____
POST NOTE: Contacted Mike Lanza about the fact that there's a problem with something or other over at Click. He says they're on it.

12/15 - 7:17 p.m. EST: Lanza sent me some new code a couple times. We're working on it.

Social Implications of the Ubiquitous Video Phone

As an avid cameraphone user (I love my Nokia 6682 and can't wait to upgrade to a new N-series phone - hint) must take note of the thoughtful aftermath of the most recent MSM-covered events that no one would have heard of were it not for video phones.

  1. UCLA camera phone footage captured a student being repeatedly tasered.
  2. Michael Richards losing it.
Having become a walking, talking media-making machine, surrounded by many GO and NGO cameras, turnabout is only fair play. There are great advantages to being a media-making machine in the 21st Century, not least of which is fair play.

Faux Press / Fairytale Division :: The World's Longest Love Letter

Before Valentine's Day 2000, this project was titled "The World's Longest Love Letter".

In the course of "publishing" the Love Letter, many works of art were installed in the streets. Documenting their subsequent decline, I learned the advantage of embracing how nature (including human nature) changes things, and furthermore, to embrace how others' needs and desires change my own.

In a kind of fairytale moment, this excerpt from "The Faux Parade" reveals how the project came to be known as "The World's Longest Open Love Letter".
