Making a Documentary With Social Media :: God and Me

A documentary film maker has started a conversation that relates to a documentary film he's making. He's talking about it over @Seesmic.

Think this may qualify as transmedia storytelling / mediamaking, and I post this example in response to Jake Abraham's question as to who's doing / done transmedia documentary projects.

Winter Re-Run :: The Welding: Bride's Song - I'll Cut You if You Cut and Run

As promised, some documentary footage from the alternative wedding I helped produce and direct with my now-welded-together-forever pals Carol and Steve.

The song -- "I'll Cut You if You Cut and Run" -- was written by Carol and me - the bride's lyrics to my music - and was played by Brooklyn's Hungry March Band the day following the blackout of August 2003.

What a beautiful nightmare it was.

More footage from "The Welding" perhaps forthcoming. This serves as part of the collection of sketch /trailer footage I've made toward producing "The World's Longest Open Love Letter" film.

Wish me luck.

Again.

When I boot up my phone it says, "Try Again," which are words captured from inside a bottle top by an artist whom I know by the name of H.D. I bought the print from her. Perhaps it's time to hang the art collection. Again.

"Try Again."

I'm just saying.

POST NOTE: Re-posting this because I can and need to see it again.

Qik Live Stream Player :: N96 Field Test

It's here!

Nokia's N96 finally arrived, with help from my helpful neighbors who sign for my stuff from the lazy delivery guy who doesn't wanna schlep up a flight of steps and sometimes forget to deliver.

The increased quality of cellphone video will make a huge difference in what creators can imagine doing with these always-on, always-handy devices.

I'm soooooo interested in making a feature film using only cell phone video.

Need a writer, thank you very much.

In the meantime, can me and my pals produce a cellphone-based short film with Nokia's vine application? In three weeks? Dunno. ViNe keeps hanging up in Firefox. :( Have yet to install the application on the phone.

Soon.

Failing interest in a short film, a few interviews anyway.

The Humble (formerly 'Good') Shepherd :: Paula & Charlie Glendinning's Gift

On the event of my father's 80th birthday, family friends Paula & Charlie Glendinning dedicated the song, "The Humble (formerly 'Good') Shepherd" to the old man.

Here for your enjoyment is their birthday rendition of the tune that promises to be played by pipe bands around the world for decades to come.

Best gift imaginable from the best friends imaginable.

Brava y bravo, you two, for everything you make and do.

Thank you for making Dad's 80th perfectly memorable.

Make Media Any Time, Any Where w/Seesmic as tool

Posted earlier the beginning of a conversation about my process of being part of "City Island" with Seesmic as conversational film making tool.

It's been a while since I played @ Seesmic, but their player - to which one may reply in video without ever leaving my page - brilliant - has grown up. Come of age.

All you need is a webcam, Camtwist, and a Seesmic account.

Everybody on set's got one.

Most sets have wi-fi.

Show folks what's what in 3 minutes or less.

It's really fucking easy.

We're all film makers, damnit. Superior technicians.

Why wouldn't we make media?

The question is: can we do it right? Will production trust us with the responsibility? Will something beautiful be made of it one day? What will the unions make of this? Are we not all bloggers / videobloggers / still photographers / prop masters / film makers?

Cheap tools & technology, baby.

Should we not reap benefits from this expanded endeavor all the way around?

Seesmic.

Think high-tech, lo-fi.

Think ubiquitous.

Vlogging City Island w/Raymond De Felitta :: My Bum

Cleansing the film maker palate with instant media.

Make & distribute short films while working 18 hours a day as captain of a ship.

It can be done.

Nokia N-series phone.

Get some product placement from Nokia, yo :)

Seesmic. Web-cam-based conversations. Depak Chopra posts here. It's good. Find somebody with a MacBook Pro and say it. Add a title and bingo, Seesmic auto-posts a notice w/ link to Twitter.

Qik. Stream live video from your Nokia phone.

Flickr. The "City Island" group @ Flickr.

Facebook. "City Island" fan page. 80 fans so far and climbing. Cool.

IMDB. Some conversations going on over there.

Shozu. A small cellphone application that allows you to title, tag and add blog text to stills and videos. Auto cross-uploads to any number of sites, including YouTube, Blip, Flickr, Vimeo, Veoh, and any email address. All bypassing cellphone email size limits. That said, you should definitely have an unlimited data plan if you get serious about working this way.

Twitter. Any blog post here is automatically posted to Twitter with a link to the original blog page. I can also make posts directly to Twitter with a text message to my phone.

Utterz. Dial a phone number (speed dial), press '2', speak, press '#', hang up. Utterz auto-posts to any number of sites you tell it to. No password entering BS; Utters remembers you & your phone. From Utterz --> Blog --> Twitter --> RSS feed --> Subscribers.

Blip.TV. Free sound & video host with auto-crossposting for non-cellphone video. It also transcodes video from either Windows or Quicktime into high-quality flash. Created your own, branded show player. Blip talks to Blogger, YouTube, the Internet Archive, among others.

Blogger. Free. In perpetuity.

All these online applications talk to one another on your behalf.

At any given time, when you find a moment of note, you can communicate with your friends, family & audience.

All without breaking stride, really.

Smooth.

My Bum. Sorta.

Storytelling :: Masculinity & The Good Old Days

.:. Faux Press .:.

CUSS WORD ALERT.

Documenting an idea of masculinity.

This is the version of masculinity upon which I was weaned.

It informed my life for decades.

Now, I challenge it intellectually if not in my heart.

I'm torn.

Having rejected this way of being masculine intellectually, my heart knows not what it wants.

Ironic that we had gathered together as a family to speak of drinking and drugging.

Ultimately, we are each responsible for our behaviors, no matter what history or experience informs those behaviors. The past is not explored or given as excuse, but explanation / exploration toward understanding, and understanding toward forgiveness and change.

Change for the bertter? Damn straight.

I told a friend of mine about the intervention we'd hoped to initiate.

His first question was, "Was anyone hurt?" Thankfully, I was able to tell him, "No."

He then related the story of how in 1991 his sister had been murdered and brother crippled by a 3-strike drunk driver.

Brought some things home.

This is serious business, bro.

My brother, I love you. Please don't kill anybody. I beg you. Get some fucking help.

Dad & his pals were lucky.

Your luck's not that good. We know this.

Times have changed.

DO NOT DRINK & DRIVE, motherfucker.

DON'T FUCKING DO IT.
