Re-Vlog :: Ted Hope's NYC DIY Days Dinner

Transparency and community in film making as inspired by web possibilities [Shhh: Web 2.0].

Ted describes his blog -- whence comes the enclosed potluck dinner video -- like this:

We are on the verge of a new film culture and infrastructure, driven by both the creators and the audiences. We must accept that being a filmmaker means taking responsibility for our films all the way through the process. Building the new infrastructure is the first step towards real media independence.

Micro-budgeted, crowd-sourced, long-tailed, self-distributed feature film makers speak to the evolving business model.

In this Part 1 of 3 DYI Dinner are found the diners' introductions. Diners include:

Two more segments follow this one, below linked.

The Humble (formerly 'Good') Shepherd :: Paula & Charlie Glendinning's Gift

On the event of my father's 80th birthday, family friends Paula & Charlie Glendinning dedicated the song, "The Humble (formerly 'Good') Shepherd" to the old man.

Here for your enjoyment is their birthday rendition of the tune that promises to be played by pipe bands around the world for decades to come.

Best gift imaginable from the best friends imaginable.

Brava y bravo, you two, for everything you make and do.

Thank you for making Dad's 80th perfectly memorable.

VlogEurope 2007 :: Revlog :: Media Ripple :: Happy Birthday from Loiez

A haiku vlog-card from Loiez, one of my favorite poet / vloggers on the planet, and a hugely talented human being. No one's ever made me a video birthday greeting before.

What an honor to have met him and his lovely wife @ VlogEurope.

You've no idea how deeply this touches me, Loiez.

Thank you.

Vlogvertising Vloggersation

Michael Verdi speaks to the state of vlogvertising HERE. In the post, he links to one of Jay Dedman's 2006 vlogs on the subject of advertising A click-through is worth a trip.

I've been experimenting with vlogvertising for a long time. As the first human being to have purchased an ad on a vlog, can say that for the nonce, vlogvertising remains in its infancy, and as every parent knows, infancy includes sleepless nights and dirty diapers. For all that, there remain rewards.

Have been experimenting with Blip.tv's advertising options. Certain choices are allowed for:

  • mid-roll video
  • post-roll video
  • post-roll clickable text cards
  • stills / animated gifs embedded in the post page
  • one-by-one, or all of the above
These items are frequently discussed on the Blip user group, so I have no qualms saying it here, too. As a producer, I need to be able to choose what products I support, and on a per-post basis.

I must be able to choose specific ads, too, based on whether I think my audience will respond to them, but more important, whether I find the ads authentic, interesting, and compatible with the mood of the video at hand. Better Bad News had a recent vlog that envisions startups auditioning venture capitalists rather than the other way around. Like THAT.

Blip's hot on the trail of these things.

In the meantime - as far as I can tell - no automated vlogvertising site offers choices of advertisers or specific ads (though you may 'blacklist' keywords for - immen.se - one of Blip's advertising partners). Until that happens, content creators create in-house advertising for people, places, music, events and products we believe in. But that doesn't provide content producers with direct compensation.

Why the hell not?

Paid advertising-as-business-model is flawed by definition. It is by its ruthless nature corrupt in its use of hyperbole and lie. Morally flawed so deeply that in my heart I suspect any company (or politician) that stoops to advertising of disingenuousness.

That is in part why big stakes are increasingly good indicators of subjects unworthy of my attention. It bugs me out that Apple's iTunes / iPod images are everywhere.

I support imperfection. Small enterprise.

MacLeod asked a while back where he thought marketing was heading and I told him.

Think:
  • Sets not billboards.
  • Wardrobe rather than SWAG baseball caps.
  • Playgrounds rather than couches for couch potatoes.
  • Jazz improv rather than rock n' roll.
  • Paying more.
  • Better products.
[DISCLAIMER: As an independent producer, I have a vested interest in taking down OLDSTREAM MEDIA and their OLDSTREAM MARKETING / ADVERTISING methodologies. Using tits and ass to sell shit is shooting fish in a barrel. Where's the fun in that? Where's the sport? I want a highest-common-denominator life. Period. I'm the long tail with education and money to spend.]
The enclosed video bears repeating. The 100-post-long Vloggersation to which this vlog post responds is to be found HERE.

Fish in a barrel.

[Download the Quicklime version HERE.]

Were Coca-Cola to donate its entire 2008 advertising budget to education - say media literacy - and spend 2007 talking about it, now, that would be cool. Spend that budget on AMERICA and its future.

Finally, social currency must be added to the sustainability equation. Advertising mathematically deflates social currency, as the recent Pay-per-Post flap so clearly illustrates.

What inflates social currency?

Vlogalicious :: Moo?

Some kind words from Ryan about The Faux Press from a new site. Thanks, Ryan.

"She is not a vlogger. She is an artist hiding in the realm of the vlog. Jan is the so-called “Faux journalist”, who’s job is to report “on the poetry of humanity in multi-media.” In this way, she stands out from much of the crowd, content to merely get their political and emotional views and feelings across. “Vlog of a Faux Journalist” is an experience unlike any other, and is a must-view."

Road Node 101 :: Gretna, NE :: Eric

Arrived outside Omaha following Off-the-Grid Geek camp utterly exhausted and without land-legs. Stumbling from the car, this man loped to hold open the door. Invited him to visit. He did. I had one small tomato, some salt & pepper chips, a loaf of bread, and the left-over Scotch whisky Scott Prentice had offered as a parting gift. Eric and I ate together. It seemed a feast.

Early on, Eric told me he's an ex-con, but I knew that already from the tattoos.

He made me feel beautiful.

Sweet Eric made me the beneficiary of an air mattress he had but did not use. It was marvelous to sleep not on the ground. thank you, Eric. You're an angel.

Bill Streeter: thanks for the well-timed couch.

Google Pays More

Now, this from Google turns economics and philanthropy on its head.

Have recently seen that tax incentives have two edges on its sword. So has Google seen it.

Please, somebody vlog this major shift in philanthropy. Wrote Google a note asking them to document the process in a vlog.

Here's to hope.

"Pay more."

Road Node 101 :: Parking Ticket?

Multimedia message

This car got a ticket. We look at the ticket to find out why since we contemplated partking there. "Too close to the hydrant," it read.

John and I thought it far enough from the hydrant to be legal. We snapped and uploaded this photo, then left a note with my email in the event they wanted documentation of the legality of their parking job.

What do you think? Too close?

High tech good samaritans.

UPDATE: The owner of the subject automobile and I have been going back and forth these last 24 hours. Here's our conversation.

Thank you so much for your note. It’s funny because I was just about to run back to get my camera. What sort of documentation do you have? Anything’s appreciated and your kindness is great. Buy you a coffee at Oslo?

Here's the photo online - sent to flickr in order to have a time-stamp.

Hehehe.

Good luck!!

P.S. We're going now to the Coco Cafe for dinner.

Our pleasure. Entirely.

One of the pleasures of being an art-geek.

Took a breeze through your site. Brilliant.

Looking further into you site, think you may find a project with which I'm tangentially involved of interest.

Ashley Hodson - with a "grant" from the vlogosphere's Have Money Will Vlog - leaves in a couple weeks to travel around the country to document / report on all things green and sustainable. Four months.

Up your alley? Got any suggestions for people/places (your authors?) they could visit?

She should DEFINITELY go to White River Junction VT: It’s where Chelsea Green is. Totally important. Will think on other stops. We have authors all over the place. This is so wonderfully randomly perfect. Tell her to call me!!!

Road Node 101 :: Off-the-Grid Geek Camp

Scoble hosted a small bus-load-worth of geeks in Montana for four days.

I present the salient visual details: a collection of geek eyes.

One reason I went to Off-the-Grid Geek Camp was because I'd seen how Robert and his son, Patrick (who composed the music for this piece), were together as a team at Vloggercon. In the middle of a chaos of folks vying for Robert's attention, Patrick was clearly the focus of his awareness, yet the rest also were served . Was further impressed by the fact that Robert's cell phone number is prominently displayed on his blogsite.

A brave act in an age of fear and distrust.

Net/net: It's a shitload more safe in the world than folks would have us believe.

Thanks for reminding us to be brave, Robert, even in small ways.

It was soooooo hot the day I arrived near Luckey, OH.

NYC Vloggers: Wednesday 9/28 New Orleans Benefit Concert

Film colleagues of mine are involved with this project - the folks with whom I worked in New Orleans for the month of January 2005.

The benefit concert for New Orleans is $25 / person in Central Park's Rumsey Ball Field and boasts a stellar group of musicians.

Here's the note that came with the PDF:

Hi everyone. You are getting this email for one of two reasons. Either you worked with us in New Orleans and have a great attachment to the city or you are working with us now and I know you have the day off Wednesday.

Either way, this concert should be fantastic and is really affordable and is for a great cause, assisting the musicians of New Orleans in this time of need. We all know that the town ain't nothing without it's music.

Best regards,
Jake Abraham
