Revisiting Road Node 101 Autumn 2005

With the return of Tim D to the vlogosphere and reconnecting with Margot Lynch through Facebook and MySpace, revisit Autumn 2005 travels.

Spent two months in D's Saratoga Springs working with Margot. That film project was one of those seminal work events you KNOW will be with you as part of the Big Slide Show in the end.

"The Timeless" tune in WGA strike re-run here is one that Margot played for the sound department one day at lunch when Neil (boom) and I broke out the cart for recording sound effects.

Margot sets my brain on fire.

Great to have you both back in my life.

Here's the recording for download in .mp3 There's a better-produced recording of the tune on Margot's Myspace page. Check it out.

Guilty. Pleasure.

Mmmmm.

Leaving VlogEurope 2007, inadvertently stole breakfast. The victim didn't mind.

VlogEurope 2007 :: Boring Parts

[music source]

POST NOTE: Technical tip :: notice how some of the initial shots begin in soft focus. This is a technique I experimented with for the first time on this Sunday morning shoot day to fool the camera into doing a focus pull thusly:

Begin rolling with your hand or lens cover in place. Remove hand or lens cover. As the camera finds its 'focus', it renders on the fly an in-camera focus pull that works well for some shots.

Thanks Xacti.

Shot by Tajee.

Demonstration by Gabe Mac and Aske Dam.

Edited by yours truly.

Think it may be possible to use a boom pole (already in the tool kit) rather than invest in a new monopod device.

VlogEurope :: Day One :: 8/28

Don't recall what this video is...

Oh, right, the shoeshine.

One of the first things I do when I begin travel is to have my shoes shined.

The local shoeshine shop is inevitably a great resource for local history and pointers to the best places to get a hearty workin-person's lunch.

another node hits the road

Road Node 101 is experiencing a temporary state of envy, having only recently re-registered my vehicle for 2007.

Node 101 promotes media literacy. You can be a Node 101 if you want to. My own version - Road Node 101 - prefers road trips.

Road Node 101 media echo alert.

From Cheryl's post:

Yeah, so I bought a stupid vanity plate. I included a tool tip for geek girls, too.

Road Node 101 :: Gretna, NE :: Eric

Arrived outside Omaha following Off-the-Grid Geek camp utterly exhausted and without land-legs. Stumbling from the car, this man loped to hold open the door. Invited him to visit. He did. I had one small tomato, some salt & pepper chips, a loaf of bread, and the left-over Scotch whisky Scott Prentice had offered as a parting gift. Eric and I ate together. It seemed a feast.

Early on, Eric told me he's an ex-con, but I knew that already from the tattoos.

He made me feel beautiful.

Sweet Eric made me the beneficiary of an air mattress he had but did not use. It was marvelous to sleep not on the ground. thank you, Eric. You're an angel.

Bill Streeter: thanks for the well-timed couch.

Never underestimate the impact of great effort.

Curtis is another sound / music geek. You'll hear his works in his vlog entries.

Nice mashup, Curtis. This vlog entry is definitive of Road Node, and it's easy to see from it that you got it.

Post Note: This is an experiment with Blip.tv's new user interface for mp3's. It's a flash-based thing that requires specific sample rates. 44.1 kHz works. 48 kHz doesn't. 32 kHz doesn't work either. Let's see if this passes through RSS pipes.

Road Node 101 :: Sturgis Rally Biker Fashion

Was terrified when I learned Road Node 101 had landed in Deadwood, S.D. at the height of the Sturgis Rally in the midst of half a million bikers. Didn't take long to get excited at the prospect of experiencing the biker phenom firsthand.

The charmingly disarming Gary Landeen started the aclimitization process nicely as he prepared to attend a white plate dinner by inviting Scott Prentice and me to help tweak his biker tuxedo for the event. Thanks for sharing your bike and fashion vulnerability with the Faux Press, Gary.

Road Node 101 :: Techniques for Road Warriors

Road Node hit Deadwood, SD, just in time for the Sturgis Rally that roared down the road a'piece, and an evening's worth of vloggersation with Scott Prentice, the godfather of South Dakota vlogging.

A bit about road technique.

Huge road challenge: keeping tools handy.

Solution: the tool belt with cellphonecamera (Nokia 6682) and iPod/Griffin iTalk mic/speaker in tow. Camera optional but always nearby.

The advance recording of sound effects / sound tracks independent of footage - used to shape the footage sometimes, holds. Record a bunch of sound tracks before rolling a single foot, apart from arrivals. Arrivals are nearly always captured.

Four days without access to electricity at the Grotto was challenging and even today, cellphone footage from the way-off-the-grid action awaits attention. Have finally bluetoothed the things to the mac, which is full-to-the-brim with footage and sound tracks.

Once in situ, I tend to try to reduce the actual amount of time spent filming to a bare minimum. Lifepractice tells me that being in the moment builds knowledge & trust with the cast; knowledge & trust help set up potential moments.

Props. Just one something or other can take the cast out of the cerebral, and afford the soft intellectual focus that differentiates a fine performance from one that is 'acted' and less authentic.

As you suss out the situation, look for repetitions - rhythms & rhymes if you will. Rhyme & rhythm form the basis of storytelling with motion pictures.

At Geek Camp, I noticed the intensity of folks' gazes. The answer to, "Where is the story," was "in the eyes". Dig?

At the Ozark Grotto, on swimming jaunts to the river, I used the iPod/Griffin iTalk mic/speaker to good effect. Will post some interviews and sound bytes soon.

Spent an hour unexpectedly iChatting with MMeiser. An electrical extravagance indulged by virtue of my surprise at having gotten online via cellphone modem with only two bars. Having on arrival given up any idea of digitizing, editing, or email-writing, I did make time to drive into Rolla one evening to a restaurant, but mostly in order to plug all the tools in for an hour as I drove.

Kept a vehicular power strip in place with the DC/AC lighter-powered inverter.

Also maintained a $20 box-with-retractable-handle-on-wheels that contained all the bits and pieces I'd need once landed. (Power strip charging station, micsellaneous food, water, tobacco, extra and exposed videotape, bathroom bag.) This was easily taken from the floor of the front seat and transported wherever, with the added benefit of loading on any extra bags for rolling rather than hand-carrying.

Always keep the iPod cable and its small charger, firewire cable for camera --> G4 Mac, saline solution & lip balm in a small zippered case that attaches to a D-ring of the computer case.

Also keep handy an Inverness Cape raincoat that protects armloads of ditital gear and an outdoor Research rain hat. Best $43 I ever spent since the hat keeps rain from sloshing down the neck. Between these two items, I've stopped even thinking about umbrellas. Fold the hat up in the pocket of the Inverness Cape, and you've got a rain protection stragegy with a minimal footprint; the whole works folds up to a 2" x 6" x 8" package.

Here's a link to the Nokia 6682 Cellphone/Camera I use @ Amazon.com. Previous comments about movlogging indicate it's not easy to find. Unfortunately, not all carriers support it.

So, that's the tech report from Road Node 101, folks.

Media Ripples :: David Meade's Take on Node 101 Weekend

Node 101 Weekend was a celebration of what we've accomplished together in the last two years. "Pay more," is a saying I'm fond of saying. Node 101 pays more. They spread the bucks around for business and pleasure. For life.

Open Source investment returns are often indirect.

Sometimes they're right on the button.

In the newest, coolest news, I'm vlogging with Markus Sandy and Dave Toole @ SpinFlow. Guess this is a disclosure. SpinXpress supports The Faux Press' endeavors in every way imaginable. In return, I support them. It's a marriage of aesthetics.

SpinFlow will have a debut soon. I'll let you know when they feel the site is ready to fly.

Notes About Road Node 101.

So much to say. First, some business.

Node 101 contributed $300 toward Node 101 / Meet the Vlogger / Vlogger Meetup events expenses from what it earned producing Vloggercon.

I've a responsibility to report how it was spent.

  • $150 was spent on food for the Minnesota Vlogger Meetup. Video (including what we got for our money) here. Still await an invoice from Adam to ship to Schlomo for his records. While I told Adam that Node 101 would cover expenses up to $200 / event I hadn't really intended to spend this much on that one evening. Oops. That said, you'll see that Crow River Coffee made a pretty incredible spread for the 5 folks (not including the kids) that showed up.

  • $150 was spent to feed folks at Off-the-grid Geek Camp.

Road Node 101 :: Cory Vandenberghe in Minnesota

Cory Vandenberghe rocks.

He surprises me all the time.

On the road, sometimes it felt a bit lonely and less successful than I would have hoped. Cory sent little notes of encouragement that often got me through another day. He also sponsored a couple hundred miles, and between the two, warmed the cockles of my heart.

Thanks, Cory.
