Re-Vlog :: Ted Hope's NYC DIY Days Dinner

Transparency and community in film making as inspired by web possibilities [Shhh: Web 2.0].

Ted describes his blog -- whence comes the enclosed potluck dinner video -- like this:

We are on the verge of a new film culture and infrastructure, driven by both the creators and the audiences. We must accept that being a filmmaker means taking responsibility for our films all the way through the process. Building the new infrastructure is the first step towards real media independence.

Micro-budgeted, crowd-sourced, long-tailed, self-distributed feature film makers speak to the evolving business model.

In this Part 1 of 3 DYI Dinner are found the diners' introductions. Diners include:

Two more segments follow this one, below linked.

Storytelling :: Masculinity & The Good Old Days

.:. Faux Press .:.

CUSS WORD ALERT.

Documenting an idea of masculinity.

This is the version of masculinity upon which I was weaned.

It informed my life for decades.

Now, I challenge it intellectually if not in my heart.

I'm torn.

Having rejected this way of being masculine intellectually, my heart knows not what it wants.

Ironic that we had gathered together as a family to speak of drinking and drugging.

Ultimately, we are each responsible for our behaviors, no matter what history or experience informs those behaviors. The past is not explored or given as excuse, but explanation / exploration toward understanding, and understanding toward forgiveness and change.

Change for the bertter? Damn straight.

I told a friend of mine about the intervention we'd hoped to initiate.

His first question was, "Was anyone hurt?" Thankfully, I was able to tell him, "No."

He then related the story of how in 1991 his sister had been murdered and brother crippled by a 3-strike drunk driver.

Brought some things home.

This is serious business, bro.

My brother, I love you. Please don't kill anybody. I beg you. Get some fucking help.

Dad & his pals were lucky.

Your luck's not that good. We know this.

Times have changed.

DO NOT DRINK & DRIVE, motherfucker.

DON'T FUCKING DO IT.

Amy's So Smart

An interview w/Amy Redford @ Sundance.

Her directoral debut, "The Guitar", premiered Friday there and plays throughout this weekend.

Fingers crossed - from inside and behind the camera, it sure felt like it would be an excellent film.

David Leonard and Amy cut it. A movie's frequently made and certainly finished in the cutting room.

The sound edit will have been challenging. Hope they had time & funds to do it right.

The sound department did its level best.

WGA Strike Looms :: Union Members Speak

Members of the Writers Guild of America, West speak about why they've volunteered to serve as Picket/Contract Captains during the WGA's talks with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers.
Marketing the contract negotiations. Framing the questions / issues.

Unions have lost tremendous ground in the last 20 years.

Let us go no farther down the slippery slope toward a return to the complete and heartless exploitation of labor.

Technology and Technicians :: Lean, Mean New Media Machines

K. Pravda writes about "35":

We should remember that “35″ is a good show not thanks to Tricaster - but thanks to great actors and intriguing script.

We should also remember that good shows are made 'good' because of hosts of technicians who work their butts off behind the lens.

When the technicians have done their job well, what they've done is transparent, so folks tend to forget they exist. Same with the technologies that support them.

The front-of-the-lens and above-the-line folks who step on stages to accept awards all know this; and those with class always recognize the crew, who - when they work - give up everything but the job in order to make the project the best it can technically be.

It's possible to create technically good material with fewer technicians in video produced for the web, but those technicians had better have their acts totally together. That's for sure. Especially with ambitious scripts like "35".

The technicians of tomorrow will wear more than one hat at a time, and should be compensated accordingly.

My hope - as we invent best practices for this new means of creation and delivery - is that technicians and technology will find a place of honor and respect in the lean, mean new media machine, both fiscally and otherwise.

CBC's Big Sugar - Part 2

Hmmm. They never taught us this history in school. Wonder why.

More questions: why in heaven's name is big sugar subsidized with U.S. taxpayer money? How much annually is given to big sugar? Under what circumstances? What legislators support this subsidy?

The CBC has lots of great documentary films on Google.

45 minutes.

About Fuckin' Time... Greed Sux

From the NY Times:

"After years of looking the other way, Congress seems finally poised to rein in the predatory practices that have become all too common in the credit card business. Several bills now pending would outlaw unfair billing practices, like the one known as universal default, under which a late payment on an unrelated bill — a utility bill, for example — allows credit card companies to raise their interest rates through the roof."

Pixelodeon :: June 9 - 10 :: American Film Institute, LA

Oh, my, goodness.

Have been so busy with the launch and creation of Wburg.TV that I wholly missed the development of this film festival by folks about whom I care.

Aw.

Rats.

Pixelodeon
.

Just perused the web site. Here's something of what it's about:

On June 9-10 in Los Angeles, California at the American Film Institute (AFI), we will have three theaters screening videos on movie-theater sized screens. Two of the theaters will screen videos selected by curators according to a theme they have selected. The third theater is the Community Theater, which is curated by you (yes, YOU) on our wiki.

Sounds amazing.

Live in LA? Visiting LA June 9-10? Check it out.

Keeping the vloggersation going.

Wishing y'all the best and that I could be there with you.

This, THIS is the kinda thing that is the viable alternative to competition.

Developers Code Twitter into a Ubiquitous Social Ap

And now, Frapper's in the game with Twitterami. You guessed it, found out about it reading Twitter posts. Thanks, Scoble.

I prefer being ahead of the curve, and being ahead or near the head of the curve is something Twitter makes easier.

Due caution: it's windy here.

Used Frapper with good success with Road Node 101 and also using it to plot Robert Smithson's world-wide earthworks for a Have Money Will Vlog project-in-progress called "ArtSmash".

RE-VLOG :: Oscar-Rejected Tribute to Crew

Thanks to PodTech for posting this video. It was scheduled to run (but didn't) during the Oscars.

As a film techie, this gives me the warm & fuzzies.

Awards ceremonies are - at their best - about saying, "Thanks!" and, "Holy shit, we did it."

Was able to download a copy of this in mp4, and wanted to upload it somewhere for general consumption, but...dare not for copyright issues. Sigh.

Nobel Peace Prize in Economics :: Microcredit to Beggars

Ah. This is very good news.

As printed in the NY Times:

Reached in Dhaka, Bangladesh, by telephone yesterday, Mr. Yunus recalled the day in 1976 when he reached into his own pocket to give his first loan, $27, to 42 villagers living near Chittagong University where he said he was then teaching “elegant theories of economics.” The borrowers invested the money and repaid him in full, though they had no collateral and signed nothing.

He said he asked himself that day, “If you can make so many people so happy with such a small amount of money, why shouldn’t you do more of it?”

Vloggies :: Non-hierarchical Awards Event :: Oxymoronic? Maybe Not

The Vloggies are coming. Yeah. We told you about it way back on July 22.

What's new is PodTech.net is actively moving forward with planning in the person of GET.tv's Irina Slutsky.

Make the Vloggies open source!

Looking at the rough draft Vloggie site, I have questions:

Where are the tired, the transgendered, the poor? Where, the means to handle non-english-speakers? Should Ze Frank (whom I adore) be allowed to compete? He's not an active (or inactive) part of the vlog community. Who decides? What is the bottom line purpose of these awards? To bring attention to PodTech and/or the Vlogosphere?
Oh shit. There are ZILLIONS of questions. Most unanswerable in an open source way.

How in Vlog's name do you structure a non-hierarchical awards event?

I'll tell you how: turn the process on its head.

Don't bother naming categories in advance. In a wine-and-beer-and-coffee-drinking creative marathon for bunches of volunteer vloggers distributed world-wide, invent categories in response to entries.

The awards ceremony becomes a similarly marathon effort. Entries / award winners find their place on the schedule by means of a lottery.

Everybody who enters, attends or wants to attend is awarded a prize. First come, first serve, up to X number of entries. Say you limit entries to 500. At 4 minutes each (3 minutes for vlog, 1 minute for acceptance speech) that's 33 hours. Three days @ 10 hours a day. It's just math.

Award-related questions I like are those having to do with what our community values:
  1. What adds value to the community?
  2. What adds value to the world?
  3. What is vlogucation?
  4. What tools have made it easier for non-geeks to vlog?
  5. Who and what are most inclusive?
  6. What's lo-fi?
These are the ideas I want represented on the green carpet.

Honor the folks who best represent vloggy ideas with face-time on stage.

Someone will eventually DO the hierarchical vloggie event. Dear Vlog, let it not be the open source Vlogosphere that creates or endorses it.

Check out the Yahoo-groups List discussion.

Richard BF on the Definition of Videoblogging

Play 3gp Version of Richard BF on the subject of competition.

I love Richard BF. This links to Richard's thoughtful meditation on vlogging.

He's so darned smart.

So darned clever.

Richard maintained the Videoblog Wikipedia entry for years. A thankless job. And now others have taken the job over. Check out the vlog entry's checkered history.

Anyway, thanks Richard, for having done this for so long. It's now in the hands of others outside the vlogosphere. Perhaps better handled there. You tell me.
