Jeff Pulver's List of MSM Video on the Internet::Ze Frank - Puh-leeeeeese!

Scoble turned me on to this Pulver fella and his huge and near-complete list of old media racing to compress extant programming for net consumption. Jeff Pulver calls it "TV/IP". Like it.

While MSM is running to the net with armloads of their old stuff, new stuff is happening; people are well on the way to re-crafting motion pictures for this new medium.

Writing and filming for the net is easy. Ze Frank's only one of many who've got it right: it's about faces. It's about sound. It's about ideas. It's about conversations and participations. Engagements. Passions.

It's about treating your audience as colleagues, and with all due respect.

It's real.

Duh.

Speaking of Ze:

When I emailed the Faux Press show URL to Pulver so that he might add it to his list, he responded with an offer to sponsor the Faux Press' attendance at the Video on the Net conference, September 12-14 in Boston. Told him I'd be happy to take a few days away from The Faux Press v. The Real Press knockdown hunger strike in D.C. if he'd cover expenses and give me three minutes of mic time. We'll see what happens.

  2. The Richard Show dynasty making an appearance in support of the wondrously beautiful Richard's Wife. I'm touched.

  3. That really was well done. I guess one could say that he is commenting so you don't have to.

  4. This Richard Show dynasty is larger than I ever imagined...

Any friend of the dynasty is a friend of mine.

    XO,

  7. @ John Rife - Ze's is a simple yet effective and reproducable style of shooting. What's difficult to reproduce is that darned charisma.

@ Ryanne - yeah. I love 'er too.

  8. Wow, I guess all I should thank all you vloggers for vlogging so I don't have too. :)

Jan, funny that you should bring Jeff up earlier in our conversation because I had this very video already loaded in my web browser I just came in an pressed play.

I think you're precisely right about ze frank.. his show is the perfect spokes show and he the perfect spokes person for videoblogging. Unlike rocketboom which is a recreation of a traditional "news show" ze frank's "show" is a completely new format... what is quickly being called the "videoblogging format"... closs ups... quick, well cut, faces, ideas. It's intimate, conversational, short, and it's not traditional in format at all.

BTW, that video by Richard's Wife and Richard was SUPERB! I could compare it in format to an apple switch ad.. but that would be an insult. It was WAY better than an apple switch ad.

  9. Thanks, Michael. The formula for successful videoblogging is so simple it's scarey. Hopefully, audiences will find these gems.

What Ze doesn't have is a presence in the community which I find kinda sad, because what I most love is the community. Feel like Ze is as unreachable as a Hollywood celebrity and that's not where / how I want to live.

  10. I don't feel like ze is unreachable or unapproachable, but I do feel that he's not as accessible if that makes sense.

This is likely because of many things.

Lack of a blog? he doesn't blog dies he?

Lack of a photoblog, flickr feed, photographic telepresence

And above all I do wish he'd participate in various podcasting and videoblogging yahoo groups.

The funny thing about such cellebrity... is the mere appearance in such places can radically alter widespread perception by the community.

A single hello in the videoblogging yahoo group would likely change people's perceptions. I've seen it before most particularly with people representing compnanies.

And maybe... what we need to do is reach out to him.

I think the most changing thing would be to do an audio or video interview or skypecast with him. Corner him at a conference or someplace and chat with him about this topic and others he finds of interest.

BTW, what I too love most is the community. It's definitely something unique to vlogging... blogging builds strongcommunities too, but not as quickly or as powerfly as vlogging. Podcasting on the other hand seems to build sort of weak communties... but of course I'll readily admit I may be wrong.

I think the answers lie in the media themselves... such as the very raw, viseral and personal nature of vlogging.

  11. I'm just gonna have to say to Michael that I can't imagine a nicer invitation to play than Maureen's plea.

What does he want? An engraved invitation?

All right Ze, ya fuck, come play with us.

"Heterogeneous::Guerilla Art Installation" 2002, engraved sign, The Read Cafe, Williamsburg, Brooklyn, County of Kings, USA

How was that for an invite, Mr. Meiser?

Perhaps we should get a bunch of us to post vlog invitations?

    Hmmm?

    Wouldn't that be fun...

    Hehehe.

    [Insert evil grin]

  12. Just so's you know I emailed ze on you all!

    :)

    Really I did. :)

It's time to start an independant ratings org... to shape standards around ratings, independantly verify them, and create some vloglandia 100 list (you know like the billboard 100) to pimp the hell out of this mofo market. We're gonna need Jeff Pulver, and Ze, and Andrew Baron, and Steve G, and maybe Eric Rice, Mike Hudack of Blip.tv, and maybe some of the advertisers already in this space as well... I don't want to run the damn thing... I'm sure we won't have any trouble finding someone to do that... I just want to help give this newly evolving sector of the ad industry a good kick in the arse so we can get some good advertisers into this space, which is critical to people like ze making some mofn' money.

    Peace out!

    -Mike

    Cheers!

    :)

  13. Sometimes, MMeiser, you scare the shit outta me - most especially when you're right. Gah. You're right. Pulver's List started the process: an A-List blogger writing and thinking about what's there.

    Now, we're in for it.

Blip is doing something agent-like already. Let's draw Mike Hudack into this discussion.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Here's the link to a John Udell interview with Mike Hudack wherein Mike talks about where Blip's going, including representing vlog artists to advertisers.

  15. Speaking of scariness, I already toalked to Mike Hudack... he was mum as could be... just told me he already spoke with Jeff about the independant ratings organization idea... but then he got mum... not sure if he was busy or I scared him and had him looking over his sholder.

Second Scarry thing... this conversation on your vlog. WOW... is this productive or what!?

I'd promote co.mments.com more but right now I feel like I'm the only one in the vlogosphere who knows where the secrete BFG2000 is. The thing is you only see a SMALL sliver of the story... this isn't even the tip of the iceberg. If you only knew what has happened to my life because of making comments on blogs... you wouldn't think it to silly when I said co.mments.com has changed my life.

    That's scary.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Yeah. I hear ya, Mmeiser.

    Must amend previous statement:

You can set co.mments preferences to send email notifications - digest / individual.

    Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaay excellent.
