I am a bad tourist in the strict sense of the word, for being in D.C. brought out my cynicism. My traveling companions felt very differently about being in our nation's capital. The American had lived in Paris for a long time. When she & her French husband went to the American embassy to see about his coming to the United States, she says she felt "sentimental" once again standing on U.S. soil. The Parisian got his green card and found standing on the capital steps something out of a Frank Capra movie. The other member of our group had years ago become a citizen. Of the four of us, he felt most strongly about our visit; it was for him a dream come true. It's good to be reminded that this place remains to many a place of hopes and dreams.
