As promised, some documentary footage from the alternative wedding I helped produce and direct with my now-welded-together-forever pals Carol and Steve.

The song -- "I'll Cut You if You Cut and Run" -- was written by Carol and me - the bride's lyrics to my music - and was played by Brooklyn's Hungry March Band the day following the blackout of August 2003.

What a beautiful nightmare it was.

More footage from "The Welding" perhaps forthcoming. This serves as part of the collection of sketch /trailer footage I've made toward producing "The World's Longest Open Love Letter" film.

Wish me luck.

When I boot up my phone it says, "Try Again," which are words captured from inside a bottle top by an artist whom I know by the name of H.D. I bought the print from her. Perhaps it's time to hang the art collection. Again.

"Try Again."

Love in a World of Capitalism :: From PRX

In anticipation of Valentine's Day, an hour contemplating the nature of love in the 21st Century from PRX.

Wish they'd set their works 'free' over there at PRX, but no, you'll have to go to their page and play it there.

Realize I'm going to give this a second listen 'cause I've been thinking about love as tool for a while. Wondering what love might be if left to its own devices.

It's easy to see why 'love' and commitment exist.

Less easy to see why and how those things might exist differently.

Mentioned in the podcast is this Gregory Corso poem "Marriage". From the end of that poem:

O but what about love? I forget love
not that I am incapable of love
It's just that I see love as odd as wearing shoes-
I never wanted to marry a girl who was like my mother
And Ingrid Bergman was always impossible
And there's maybe a girl now but she's already married
And I don't like men and-
But there's got to be somebody!

Faux Parade :: The Princess & The Man of Her Dreams :: Click.tv Test #3

Been working with the fabulous Click.tv team to troubleshoot a bit of an issue. Happily, they got a previously problematic timecode-based comment post using their free service up and jumping in a couple of days. Beta testing is demanding but rewarding work. Mostly, love seeing the results of the back and forth.

In other news, Scoble asks about critical mass for productive conversation.

My take, four max per conversation. A dozen for dinner gets 3 simultaneous conversations going. Palatable. Just enough variety toward choice.

Seating arrangements and capacity to change seats during the event facilitate the process. Different courses in different locations. The venerable post-meal retirement to the library for port and cigars comes to mind. As is my custom, I take the notion farther.

One of my problems in conversing in the vlogosphere is finding subject matter that engages me on enough levels to compel action. Scoble's question engages me intellectually, artistically, gustatorially & auditorially. As I recall the best conversations and their circumstances, memories of moments of great conversation flood.

All the best conversations happen around food & drink.

Past dinner parties given and taken emerge, among them Scoble's Off-the-Grid Geek Camp. I do so love a grande dinner party. Here are two of my own for inspiration:

1. An early flash mob / faux ballet instructed guests to meet in the park in front of the Plaza Hotel where further instructions were provided, specifically

a) You are dancers who will walk through the Plaza Hotel taking as many flash photographs of one another as possible.

b) Once outside the hotel, hail cabs to the location specified in the faux press pads for an intimate eight-course meal with live jazz piano.

2. An excerpt from a Valentine's Day Faux Parade given in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. Instructions were to meet at magic hour (then 5:30 p.m.) near the M train's Bedford Avenue Subway Stop - listen for the brass band - join the parade. Afterward, we ate tapas & drank wine. The resulting full-length film is 28 mintues long and features all my dinner guests along with lots of new friends & other local folks I love.

The advantage of such events is that you are provided with properly fresh & delicious fodder for conversational topics. More than that, adrenaline and laughter fuel the thing. After trust has been established, it's ever so easy to move on to the deep topics that we love.

A nod to MMeiser for creating the word 'vloggersation' - a thing that requires a lot more work to facilitate ease-of-use.

Faux Press / Fairytale Division :: The World's Longest Love Letter

Before Valentine's Day 2000, this project was titled "The World's Longest Love Letter".

In the course of "publishing" the Love Letter, many works of art were installed in the streets. Documenting their subsequent decline, I learned the advantage of embracing how nature (including human nature) changes things, and furthermore, to embrace how others' needs and desires change my own.

In a kind of fairytale moment, this excerpt from "The Faux Parade" reveals how the project came to be known as "The World's Longest Open Love Letter".

"Four-Minute Ballet for Faux Press, Celebrities and Disposable Cameras" is the official title of this 2000 piece that features the music of Ahmed El-Motassem's Legal Fiction. The tune's called "I Want to Be You".

Found the song after we did the film but it fit so perfectly that I couldn't not make a music video of the work. We played with the ideas of celebrity and media.

The only scripted dialog is Lauren's: "No photos! No photos please!"

"She heard the music and wanted to come and play with the soldiers," he said. At first, the little gal was grim as a girl accustomed to seeing soldiers in the street would be. The Princess-at-Large sang a verse from "My Funny Valentine" but all was well when the wee lass smiled.

New fairytales. Adult fairytales.

This is but an excerpt from the full "Faux Parade", which at 21 minutes represents the collected Valentine's Day adventures of the Princess-at-Large in a bunch of fairytale-quality vignettes. It's also a trailer for a movie I'm continuously producing titled "The World's Longest Open Love Letter."

Interesting to revisit the motion pictures.

The Faux Portrait Painting you see here was actually a dress rehearsal for an event that later happened in a venue that prohibited the use of paint. Or chalk. Go figure.

So, Costain the Painter & I did it in constant contact, crawling all over his body as if he were a tree or jungle gym.
