I Suck @ Sound Generosity :: Really?

This guy writes this post about me over at the pro sound newsgroup:

I can't tell you how many sound mixers basically, ignored me, even to
this day... It didn't stop me, I just never had a real apprenticeship
and ended up just buying the gear, and jumping in.. mistakes and all.

I'll show you a wounderfull example of this "shun" in action by a lot of
the sound mixers out there.

Go over to, Jan McLaughlin's website..
http://fauxpress.blogspot.com/

Introduce yourself as a follower of the blog, you'll get a nice email
back, ect... Then tell her your an aspiring sound mixer! BAM! That
will be the last contact you have... A real shame.

-bill

He must be thinking of some other 'Jan McLaughlin' else he's as much of a jerk in his opening email communications with me as he is above.

Help me out here, people; I've helped a LOT of you with sound advice.

Speak up in the comments please.

How do YOU get and keep the attention of possible mentors?

I got my first sound mentor by giving him and his sound team 4 months of 75-hour weeks for nothing but cappucinos; in all that time the mixer didn't speak to me at all until my last day.

_____
POST NOTE: Of course, it appears comments for THIS POST are borked. Just when I really need / want 'em. Murphy's law.

Not 'commerce' but rather, 'commonwealth'.

Oh.

Yeah.

I get it now.

Testing Blip.FM blog publication. Already integrated into Twitter, I like being able to embed a song in the blog. Let's see...

Haskell Wexler's "Who Needs Sleep?"

Must research where I can get my hands on this film.

Ah-ha! One may order the DVD HERE.

Current job "City Island" has been darned civilized, I'm guessing primarily due to the producers' and director's inherent humanity, and less so, budgetary concerns, since by our contract after 14 hours the crew goes into triple time.

Signs of the Times :: The Economy Sux

.:. Faux Press .:.

Yeah.

Remember when neraly every car in NYC featured hand-written signs taped to a rear window that said things like, "Don't bother. Everything's been stolen already," or, "Sorry, nothing left."

People react to having been violated by making signs.

Signs of the times.

Lessig's Not Running

[source]

It's the correct decision, so the disappointment was fleeting.

The netroots discourse begins.

Heard the word 'netroots' - as in 'netroots movement' - for the first time yesterday in an KUOW's "The Conversation" podcast that asks a distinguished panel to address the nature of freedom on the web.

"What is Freedom on the Web?"

In context of the legal censure of wikileaks.

[KUOW source]
.
DIGRESSION: Whistleblowing without fear of reprisal - and further - with reward - will be an essential not-yet-culturally-supported tool in combating the corruption Lessig has vowed to fight. How may culture support that behavior?

Film = Sculpture = Architecture

Revisiting some motion pictures that were at one point or another diverted to VHS.

Thanks to Ms. Jen Simmons and an eyetv 250 Plus, I'm able to digitize and revisit that footage.

It has an interesting if dated quality.

This offers a director's commentary on three early motion pictures. Below links are to the original, unadulterated works:

"Yoing" - written by Mikki LeMoine

"Mommie's Coming Back" - written by Jan McLaughlin

"The Psychic Poets Show" - written by Jan McLaughlin

The first two were originally shot on 35mm black & white stock - the same stock that Spielberg's 1993 "Schindler's List" was shot on. Our production performed pre-Schindler Beta tests for Kodak.

The other - "Psychic Poets" - was shot to a Beta deck.

Have lost touch with a lot of these people.

No regrets.

Realize I've been fascinated by advertising for a very long time.

Jeff Kelley :: Mentor / Friend / Blues Guitarist

The man's got a CD entered in the Blues Society of Western Pennsylvania 2008 International Blues Challenge.

Spoke about Jeff in a previous podcast HERE.

We go back a long way, he and I; he taught me "As Time Goes By". Thanks for that, Jeff. It's a song that's been with me in a meaningful way ever since. A wonderful companion.

Jeff's not yet got much of a web presence. Perhaps if this post gets to him, we can work something out Creative Commons-wise for vloggers to be able to use his works in exchange for link love.

Speaking of link love, gimme some.

Pay More

Don't know if y'all are aware, but I read the entirety of "Lady Chatterley's Lover" by D.H. Lawrence into the public domain in podcast format.

Just had a wee mention of it recently, HERE, so I'm thinking about the project in retrospect.

That son-of-a-bitchin' thing took me a year-and-a-half to complete. I thought something good would come of it. Not so much: a couple of friends from around the planet and $14.

On second thought, the friends are worth a LOT. You know who you are :)

Here's the FeedCycle feed: http://feeds.feedcycle.com/10061/10104/fbf781ab/1177669641/

The feed will deliver a chapter a week to your aggregator for 20 weeks.

Each chapter took me at least six hours to make.

If you've got a time-sensitive, send-it-out-in-order kinda project that may or may not require password protection, FeedCycle's for you. WARNING: You have to hand-enter posts, so if your media is already posted on the net, you'll have a bit of detailed transfer-of-information to deal with.

What that article brings to mind is the fact that I'm not world-class at anything but being a catalyst. Sure, I know how to do a lot of things. That's only because I'm easily bored and can master a thing easily. Once I get a single bit of traditional success (an award or publication or performance), I'm soon on to the next thing.

It's a kind of curse.

What's stuck with me is making motion pictures.

That's why I'm on the planet.

Vlogonomics :: This Just In

On the heels of my recent post on the long-term nature of investing in vlogonomics are these words from Seth Godin.

Seth says, "I still remember an interaction I had with Jim at Activision in 1985.

"And when I run into Ted once or twice a year, he reminds me of something I gave him eight years ago.

"As Derren reminds us, your actions today could be tomorrow's anecdote. One that grows in the telling. In fact, every single interaction you have... every blog post, every customer service interaction, every shareholder conference call... could turn into an anecdote that lives on for years.

"I guess you're in the anecdote creation business now."

Yeah.

Goodwill memories are deep.

How exciting is that? Damnably exciting.

From the TEDtalks site on the enclosed Richard St. John audio:

Why do people succeed? Because they're smart? Or lucky? How about: Neither. Richard St. John compacts seven years of research on successful people into an unmissable 3-minute slideshow on the real secrets of success (Hint: passion, persistence, and pushy mothers help). It's the End of YouTube, For Sure

It's the end of YouTube, I tell you. And all the rest who find it fun to be or play with the 'Big Boys.' Yeah. It's all fun and games until the Big Boy hits you over the head with a baseball bat and walks away with your muse, your very-popular significant other: pop culture.

Big Boys are ruthless that way.

I too have noticed a plethora of videos removed for TOS violations, not least of which a Hillary Clinton presidential announcement video scraped from CNN.

This is most certainly NOT the end of user-created, user-mediated media. Not by a longshot.

With copyright-based systems springing up all over, it will become increasingly more challenging for content creators and their audiences to create and find interesting works, but we shan't allow video culture to die just because we can't legally partake of popular culture.

No-siree-bob.

My advice? Don't be a pussy; take a few more steps back from the popular center of the walled garden.

  • Live, consume and create from the edges
  • Support those Big Boys who open the gate to the IP garden with your dollars, eyeballs, links, and content
  • Spend lots of time listening to Creative Commons-licensed music
These things will require more of you.

Pay more.

Vlogvertising Vloggersation

Michael Verdi speaks to the state of vlogvertising HERE. In the post, he links to one of Jay Dedman's 2006 vlogs on the subject of advertising A click-through is worth a trip.

I've been experimenting with vlogvertising for a long time. As the first human being to have purchased an ad on a vlog, can say that for the nonce, vlogvertising remains in its infancy, and as every parent knows, infancy includes sleepless nights and dirty diapers. For all that, there remain rewards.

Have been experimenting with Blip.tv's advertising options. Certain choices are allowed for:

  • mid-roll video
  • post-roll video
  • post-roll clickable text cards
  • stills / animated gifs embedded in the post page
  • one-by-one, or all of the above
These items are frequently discussed on the Blip user group, so I have no qualms saying it here, too. As a producer, I need to be able to choose what products I support, and on a per-post basis.

I must be able to choose specific ads, too, based on whether I think my audience will respond to them, but more important, whether I find the ads authentic, interesting, and compatible with the mood of the video at hand. Better Bad News had a recent vlog that envisions startups auditioning venture capitalists rather than the other way around. Like THAT.

Blip's hot on the trail of these things.

In the meantime - as far as I can tell - no automated vlogvertising site offers choices of advertisers or specific ads (though you may 'blacklist' keywords for - immen.se - one of Blip's advertising partners). Until that happens, content creators create in-house advertising for people, places, music, events and products we believe in. But that doesn't provide content producers with direct compensation.

Why the hell not?

Paid advertising-as-business-model is flawed by definition. It is by its ruthless nature corrupt in its use of hyperbole and lie. Morally flawed so deeply that in my heart I suspect any company (or politician) that stoops to advertising of disingenuousness.

That is in part why big stakes are increasingly good indicators of subjects unworthy of my attention. It bugs me out that Apple's iTunes / iPod images are everywhere.

I support imperfection. Small enterprise.

MacLeod asked a while back where he thought marketing was heading and I told him.

Think:
  • Sets not billboards.
  • Wardrobe rather than SWAG baseball caps.
  • Playgrounds rather than couches for couch potatoes.
  • Jazz improv rather than rock n' roll.
  • Paying more.
  • Better products.
[DISCLAIMER: As an independent producer, I have a vested interest in taking down OLDSTREAM MEDIA and their OLDSTREAM MARKETING / ADVERTISING methodologies. Using tits and ass to sell shit is shooting fish in a barrel. Where's the fun in that? Where's the sport? I want a highest-common-denominator life. Period. I'm the long tail with education and money to spend.]
The enclosed video bears repeating. The 100-post-long Vloggersation to which this vlog post responds is to be found HERE.

Fish in a barrel.

[Download the Quicklime version HERE.]

Were Coca-Cola to donate its entire 2008 advertising budget to education - say media literacy - and spend 2007 talking about it, now, that would be cool. Spend that budget on AMERICA and its future.

Finally, social currency must be added to the sustainability equation. Advertising mathematically deflates social currency, as the recent Pay-per-Post flap so clearly illustrates.

What inflates social currency?

Revlog :: The Carol and Steve Show - Episode #32

Photo (cc 2.0) by Steve Garfield

This revlog of The Carol and Steve Show Episode #32 is a pleasant walk down memory lane, inspired by revisiting the Vlog Press Kit, a site I "maintain" mostly by virtue of an automated collection of dynamically updated sidebar links to press coverage of vlog-issues. (Here's a post in which I explain how to do this.)

Revisited the Press Kit because I intended to test the Blogger Beta to Alpha upgrade. Upgrade angst. Yeah. If you've ever done it you'll understand the gastric uproar that accompanies the act of pressing the 'Save Template Changes' button. The Vlog Press Kit is my least-visited site, so it made perfect sense. Still, I worried that upgrading one would upgrade all. Thank God that is not the case.

A podcast that addresses this darned-near-seamless, simple Blogger upgrade process will follow later today or tomorrow. Blogger evidently did it right. And I'm loving the new, more-streamlined look.

Memory lane has only two steps:
Do you forgive me for being a little proud of being the first human being ever to pay for a vlog ad?

Folks who know me well are not shy to characterize me first and foremost as a pioneer.

Yeah.

A role increasingly less easy to play in an ever-more-crowded world.

Still, it can be done.

Again, playing with money.

Art and Commerce.

Money-as-canvas is often as not a nerve-wracking business.

Difficult to document, but not impossible.

Money-as-canvas is ephemeral and elusive.

The more potential levels of understanding of a work of art, the better. I liken my particular flavor of art to 3-D chess.

Hubris? Arrogance?

Yeah.

But also extreme humility.

"Pay more."
