Grace :: The Story of the Remote :: Dirty Joke

.:. Faux Press .:.

Learn to listen.

Here's a telling of "The Story of the Remote".

The image is from an earlier post wherein I show you part of the woman who speaks in this podcast

The upside of the dismal-looking and feeling foot situation is that she has a better way to flip her husband the bird.

She is my hero.

Her humor in the face of enormous pain astonishes and inspires.

Music is "Mother's Blues" from Jeff Kelley's Classic Acoustic Blues album - about whom I've written in this space before.

Retrospective :: Wolfgang Hastert

For whatever reason, I've been reconnecting with folks from my past.

File under: Upside of 5th decade.

File under: Inspiration

File under: Work

File under: Friends

File under: influences

File under: Pleasure to see folks with whom I worked ages ago still making beautiful things.

Wolfie.

Go have a look at his beautiful site: http://www.wolfganghastert.com/

Wolfie has an elegant vision for documentary that lays me out flat. See if you can get his works and get kicked upside your head if you're feeling a little sleepy.

Worked on a few projects with the estimable Hastert, among them his Varga Girls and Edward Hopper studies. Also, the marvelous QUEER REVERIES OF JAMES BIDGOOD.

We go back.

Wolfie taught me a lot about film making, and how to be a good film maker while remaining a good person.

I want higher resolution digital files from Mr. Hastert so I can send his work out to my small circle of estimable friends.

I want Wolfie to come out and play film maker with us on the Interwebs.

Come out & play, Wolfie!!!

Great - great - great to re-connect.

By way of recommendation, Wolfie is another metaphrast.

TECH NOTE: None of my dictionaries knows how to spell 'metaphrast'. Only a small part of why I love the word so.

The Past Catches Up

My pal and former bass player sent this and some other images in commemoration of my 50th birthday.

This is our band, Sunstroke circa 1978.

Brought a mist to my eyes and a laugh to my belly to see so vividly what has changed and what remains the same.

Now, I'm going to put on the antique Sunstroke tee-shirt also enclosed, munch down the chocolates he sent (belly-be-damned), and get Phil on the phone.

Faux Press Vlog: A Meditation on the Late 30's

NB: adult content advisory

This was an early experiment with AV recorded into the computer using an old Logitech camera. Had to jump through some hoops to get it from Windows .avi to .mov but worth it for the file size.

The poem celebrates the fear and wonder with which I approached the erotic renaissance of my late 30's.

Faux Press Vlog :: At The Bath Remix

Annie and my pal E., Voiz, Steve & Carol/Carol & Steve, Ryanne & Jay, Raymond & Kristina all have me thinking about how isolated I've felt since moving to NJ. Finding a new community here seems daunting.

Deeply missing the Williamsburg, Brooklyn vortex of artistic endeavor.

Bottom line is - and what I learned during the making of this vlog entry - that friendships do not disappear but accumulate, and none of us is alone.

Menopause & Mood Disturbance: It Sux

"The interaction between these hormonal changes, the subsequent onset of menopause-related clinical symptoms, and the emergence of mood symptoms and cognitive deficits constitute a complex puzzle."

No kidding.

"The mechanism by which neuroregulatory changes modulate the transition to menopause is still largely unknown (Wise et al., 1996)."

Why?

Conclusion of the piece is that they don't have a clue.

Sheesh.

S.I.N.K. or S.W.I.M.

S.I.N.K. - Single Income No Kids

S.W.I.M. - Single With Interesting Men

I turn 50 this year.

Have been living without a husband since January 1, 1995.

Which is not to say I've lived alone. For ten years I shared a 5000 sf space with three others. See one of the humorous loft-life episodes HERE.

I've lived alone now for a year, in another 5000 sf space somewhere in NJ.

Don't particularly enjoy living alone. Feel the loss of social skills, especially now I don't even have a neighborhood coffee shop where I can go to chat with others of my kind. So far, the NJ of my immediate surroundings feels barren of artists.

But there was a piece in the last week in the NY Times about some areas in Jersey City, Westchester, Redhook & Greenpoint, Brooklyn.

I'm looking for another warehouse tenant. 1000 sf or less. Hopefully, this tenant doesn't visit altogether that often. $.50 / sf with .01 / annum increases.

The current tenant is perfect. They come once every month or two and they are very nice indeed, if spacey (forgot my keys, broke the key, broke the elevator).

Imagine offering a pickup / delivery service within the five boroughs at $50 a shot, including toll.

Anybody?

In the News

Twenty states require - on penalty of arrest - individuals asked by police to identify themselves. New York is one of those states, but New York law does not specifically suggest arrest or other sanction for non-compliance. In June, the Supreme Court upheld Nevada's arrest requirement for refusing to identify one's self to the police on demand.

New York also has a law that makes it a crime for 3 or more people to publicly wear masks.

Justice Silbermann - in denying United for Peace and Justice's petition to conduct protests in New York's Central Park - said that "nothing in the Constitution commands that dissemination of all forms of speech at all times on all kinds of property are absolutely protected under the First Amendment, without regard for the nature of the activity, the property or the disruption that might be engendered by unregulated expressive activity in certain circumstances."

AdRants says Jane Magazine's started Jane Talks Back, a contest wherein you win S.W.A.G. by sending in pictures of ads from the magazine. The New York Times ran the story. AdRants suggests the photos would make an interesting platform for satire.

The Faux Journalist concurs and hereby offers to host any and all such parodic images here. Email them to: jan at princess at large dot com.

A perfect example of mixed media marketing / MacLeod-ish "Conversation". Now, if I only had a copy of Jane.

For my menopausal SINK friends: The NY Times published a piece that says soy works while questioning its safety and emphasizing that nobody's proved how or why. Stick with in-the-pod beans - edamame - if you can find them. Usually in the frozen vegetable section. Refinement takes a toll.

There you have it.

In & Out Theory

Either one produces or one sucks in information.

Either output or input.

It's difficult to do both at once.

That's why - in a Yin/Yang balancing act - I'm trying to do both.

By means of introduction, I am 48 - a SINK (single income; no kids); not only that, I'm:

  • post-menopausal and envisioning another turn to my career track;
  • neither rich nor poor
  • work 100-150 days a year for money
  • go out to a nice restaurant once a month
  • travel for pleasure for at least 2 weeks if not a month at least once a year
  • wake with the rooster 215- 265 days a year; write / compose / rehearse music until I pass out; nap; make lunch; work or play until 9 pm then crash
  • the kind of person who often consciously reduces sensory input
  • for the last 10 years I listened only in mono to music;
  • for the last 10 years I saw hardly any movies but those on which I worked or had a personal interest;
  • for three years, didn't watch a lick of television; and
  • for three years, watched an inordinate amount of television; then not
Now, I'm back. listening / watching everything I can afford to get my hands on. In stereo. Actually, I have a PA system for a stereo.
  • RULE: dont' fuck around
This has given me a delicious distance from which to see the direction these media have taken.

The socioeconomic divide between network / cable consumers is obvious & startling.

New cars. The auto manufacturers spend so much on advertising.

Lots of things are "age-defying".

My chick babyboomer market hasn't yet been tapped beyond fear of getting old. Beauty stuff and pharmaceuticals. Neutraceuticals catch on. Some automobile commercials appeal especially to us.

For output, I make spec commercials.

Learned in my mid-thirties to forgive myself for needing the in-and-out of it all; to trust in the cyclic nature of cash & sex.

Sexual Peak - More Portal Theory

"Vision of Community" 2003, mixed media, 3.75 x 4.75 in.

Here's a little film poem called "Sexual Peak".

The page from which it's linked is a small but effective portal for people who search "womens sexual peak" and variations thereof.

At sea changes, one wants sea change literature.

All these great blogger ad-sites get me thinking.

I'm here to study the marriage of art & commerce.

Nouveau billboards - actual works of art made by hand that people would steal - then art & commerce say something together.

Documentary / Memoir = Living Theater

"Make a Love Sound" from The World's Longest Open Love Letter Artifact Poster Series I, 2000, ink and metal on canvas

The WLOLL Artifact Posters Series I came in two editions of twelve. The first was accomplished alone in the studio as I meditated upon the kind of woman I should like to become. The second edition was a collaboration with a friend whose aesthetic initially made me cringe. Let the judgment go. Focused instead on understanding our flowering friendship.

Began to see how forgiveness might feel in accepting what ever he might create as fruit of his man-womb.

"Make a love sound" is by far my favorite of the bunch - either edition. It remained on that telephone pole - my friend is expert at placement - for 3 or 4 months. I liked to see it there when I went for coffee. A continuing part of the meditation on love.

During this time I had the great good fortune to spend an afternoon with Judith Malina and dozens of her late husband's paintings.

In her sixties or seventies, Judith came bra-less to the interview in a long-sleeved net tee. So full of life and eros. I should be lucky to age with similar grace.

Shoe Theory

Sometimes I feel just like this. Mostly not.

One might always find a better, more perfect fit; in the interim one wants to walk about most of the urban world with shoes.
