Dealing with Control Freaks

Everybody's got at least one. Wishing us all luck @ the holidays.

Control Freak Coping Strategies:

• Stay as calm as you can. Control freaks tend to generate a lot of tension in those around them. Try to maintain a comfortable distance so that you can remain centered while you speak with them. Try to focus on your breathing. As they get more agitated and demanding, just breath slowly and deeply. If you stay calm and focused, this often has the effect of relaxing them as well. If you get agitated you have joined the battle on their terms.

• Speak very slowly. Again the normal tendency is to gear up and speak rapidly when dealing with a control freak. This will only draw you into the emotional turmoil and you will quickly be personalizing what is occurring.

• Be very patient. Control freaks need to feel heard. In fact, they do not have that much to say. They have a lot to say if you engage them in a power struggle. If you just listen carefully and ask good questions that indicate that you have heard them, then they will quickly resolve whatever the issue is and calmly move on.

• Pay attention to your induced reactions. What is this person trying to emotionally induce in you? Notice how you feel when speaking with them. It will give you important clues as to how to deal with them more effectively and appropriately.

• Initially, let them control the agenda. But you control the pacing. If you stay calm and speak slowly, you will be in command of the pacing of the conversation.

• Treat them with kindness. Within most control freaks is a good measure of paranoia. They are ready to get angry and defend against what they perceive is a controlling hostile world. If you treat them with respect and kindness, their paranoia cannot take root. You will jam them up.

• Make demands on them-- especially when dealing with the type 2 control freak. Ask them to send you something or do something for you. By asking something of them, you will be indicating that you are not intimidated or diminished by their behavior patterns.

• Remember an old but poignant Maxim: “Those who demand the most often give the least.”

Revisiting some motion pictures that were at one point or another diverted to VHS.

Thanks to Ms. Jen Simmons and an eyetv 250 Plus, I'm able to digitize and revisit that footage.

It has an interesting if dated quality.

This offers a director's commentary on three early motion pictures. Below links are to the original, unadulterated works:

"Yoing" - written by Mikki LeMoine

"Mommie's Coming Back" - written by Jan McLaughlin

"The Psychic Poets Show" - written by Jan McLaughlin

The first two were originally shot on 35mm black & white stock - the same stock that Spielberg's 1993 "Schindler's List" was shot on. Our production performed pre-Schindler Beta tests for Kodak.

The other - "Psychic Poets" - was shot to a Beta deck.

Have lost touch with a lot of these people.

No regrets.

Realize I've been fascinated by advertising for a very long time.

Dutch Apple Pancakes :: Cookin' for One

Cooking for one doesn't have to suck. No indeed. I used gala apples for the recipe shown; nicely sweet and soft after baking. The original recipe calls for one to peel the apples. I don't. For the nutrition and color.

This is great for lunch right out of the oven - hot - and served in a bowl with a little milk.

The next day it's great - again warmed - for 10 minutes @ 300° in the toaster oven. Just enough to take the chill off and crisp the sugar-glazed "crust".

Preheat oven to 400°

3 Grannie Smith Apples - cored & sliced thin, are sautéed 5 minutes over medium high heat in ovenproof pan with:

2T butter
1/4 C sugar
1 t. cinnamon

Mix together to create lovely batter consistency:

3 eggs
1/2C milk
1/2C flour
1 T. sour cream
1/4 t. salt
1 t. grated lemon zest

Bake 25 minutes for golden-brown goodness that makes the house smell like home.

Amy's So Smart

An interview w/Amy Redford @ Sundance.

Her directoral debut, "The Guitar", premiered Friday there and plays throughout this weekend.

Fingers crossed - from inside and behind the camera, it sure felt like it would be an excellent film.

David Leonard and Amy cut it. A movie's frequently made and certainly finished in the cutting room.

The sound edit will have been challenging. Hope they had time & funds to do it right.

The sound department did its level best.

Mom's a Twin

Mom's a Twin

My mom's a twin. Her sister Fran committed suicide in October my first year in college. When I get a bit down I 'speak' with Fran and ask her to help me get through it. She does. Mom told me it was because of a fella she pulled the trigger. I think it was because the culture made her feel like crap 'cause she wasn't married, though I didn't always think that. I also hear she was doing daytime uppers and nightime downers. She worked for a doctor who kept her in both.

Mom still misses her in a cellular way.

Re-vlog :: GapingVoid Valentine's Day Vulnerability

Vulnerability is hot.

Hugh gets pretty darned vulnerable here.

The capacity for vulnerability is but one of the charms of blogging, vlogging (and less-so, podcasting for some reason), where individual and corporate blogs / vlogs allow for a measure of vulnerability.

Vulnerability is risky but opens up possibilities for great rewards.

Thanks for reminding me to be more vulnerable, Hugh. That's my mantra for the week.

Yeah. I've mentioned 'em before.

Lanza's the guy.

The workflow has inspired me to collect the filmworks from "The World's Longest Open Love Letter", run 'em through Blip.tv and Click.tv and here @ the Blogger site. This will hopefully help to find the voiceovers in the text and timing of it. Notes.

Perhaps this is a way in which ad-hoc directors among you might be able to field questions for the interview footage that needs to be recorded to stitch the aggregated performance pieces into a cohesive filmwork. A documentary. An art documentary. The next major project that fills the days.

Wonder how this Click.tv flash interface will translate over at Mefeedia. Hmmm. If it translates, I can collect the films over there. In a Mefeedia Collection.

Before Valentine's Day 2000, this project was titled "The World's Longest Love Letter".

In the course of "publishing" the Love Letter, many works of art were installed in the streets. Documenting their subsequent decline, I learned the advantage of embracing how nature (including human nature) changes things, and furthermore, to embrace how others' needs and desires change my own.

In a kind of fairytale moment, this excerpt from "The Faux Parade" reveals how the project came to be known as "The World's Longest Open Love Letter".

Always one for multitasking, this excerpt from "The Faux Parade" is part of a continuing meditation on media, celebrity & community, not to mention the kickoff of a cocktail party that commenced at the end of the parade. Fact is, there are more layers to this piece than I can comfortably address here.

The sub-context of the remark that the wee lass, "...wanted to come down and find the soldiers so she could play with them," makes me weep. Every time.

Featured are Agnes & Benny of The Charleston (Williamsburg's best pizza / music joint), you'll also meet my friend Anice (way in the background) and poet/engineer buddy, Steve. This excerpt covers our 2nd and 3rd stops along the parade route.
