Gas Buddy :: High-Tech Lowest Gas Prices via Crowdsourcing
Gas Buddy. Yeah.
You can send a text message with 'city / state' or 'zip code' in the body of the message and get a text back with the three lowest-priced stations in the area.
They got a mobile website, and maps, too.
All prices are removed after 36 hours, so prices remain oh-so-fresh.
There's even a mac widget for local gas prices. Whoa.

Travel Notes No. 1
Scarce resources. I give mine over mostly to VlogEurope! since this location has become defacto headquarters.
I become efficient with online time if a bit disconnected skimming quickly the vlogosphere news.
With browser access (but no upload - period) at "home" I am able to create posts, assign filenames / addresses to media and know that eventually a connection will be made for upload. In the meantime, I edit offline and it's fine with the G4 to do that. There's no way we can figure to move files into the local PC since USB is disabled and no networks can be created.
Test drive the iPod as field recording device. The default naming convention (date & time) works well for cataloging content. The mix piece Joel and I did with Yogi is a work I'm very happy with on so many levels. Capturing and making creative commons music as rewarding an experience as I can imagine.
Reading J.D. Lassica's "Darknet" whilst here. It is required reading. It may require a second time through to begin to really understand the implications.
Surprise guests Max & Stacy journalist / economists were in attendance. We needed citizen economists. Yeah. We've been waiting for you.
Furthermore, that wildman Graham Walker stationed in the Czech Republic kicked my editorial ass with his presentation on editing. Many good ideas. Radically re-editing the portrait of Max & Alex and other films already posted. This is a road-worthy concern: to want to rush the editorial process. One man band can benefit from off-scene editors to be sure. Just need reliable, consistent DSL or better to maintain contact with home base.

Faux Press Vlog: Expats in DC
Traveling with friends.
:)I am a bad tourist in the strict sense of the word, for being in D.C. brought out my cynicism. My traveling companions felt very differently about being in our nation's capital. The American had lived in Paris for a long time. When she & her French husband went to the American embassy to see about his coming to the United States, she says she felt "sentimental" once again standing on U.S. soil. The Parisian got his green card and found standing on the capital steps something out of a Frank Capra movie. The other member of our group had years ago become a citizen. Of the four of us, he felt most strongly about our visit; it was for him a dream come true. It's good to be reminded that this place remains to many a place of hopes and dreams.

Google Labs Maps Beta :: DOT Videolog
It was fun to cruise around the neighborhood via satellite photo.
Furthermore, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation has a video log of its highways to which they continually add, meaning that eventually they will have videos of by-ways as well. Requires IE.

Laptop Travel
So, we get to New Orleans and the hotel's DSL and wireless are kaput.
Spent a lot of time walking around with half an eye toward seeing an Internet Cafe.
Of course, there was a Starbucks nearby with wireless Internet access, but it would cost nearly $6 for an hour and after I paid $3.50 for a plain cup of coffee I decided they'd already got enough of my money.
Someone told me there was wireless near our set, so I set out - laptop in arms - to locate it.
Today I discovered this keychain-compatable device:
Much safer and less geeky than wandering around with your laptop cradled like an infant.
And for $26, well, it's better than insurance.

NO means yes.
At least in New Orleans it does.
A city not of contradiction but - yes - contradiction.
A Catholic region of many churches - the scent of sweet smoke-heavy must that remains the same from one sanctuary to the next - there is a must that is NO.

The faint nasal aura of bile with a backflavor of beer.
One does the sidewalk stutter around not dog shit but hours-old, half-digested po' boys.
Somehow it's okay, though it takes some getting used to.

Kleenex for Travelers
Earlier this week I wrote about how the hand lotion in hotel rooms is a "guy thing".
On that same note, realized that the presence of hotel Kleenex is also a "guy thing".
Don't know about you, but that made me giggle.
Had a vision that I must execute on canvas with Kleenex and body lotion in mind. The hotel has its outer wall removed - like a doll house. It is late at night. All the businessmen are in bed with their lotion bottles and wads of kleenex on bedside tables, their hands rest lightly on their crotches - a gesture men do when they are relaxed and sleepy.
That means I have to practice drawing hands: the oh-so-many curves, bumps and by-ways of the human hand.

Breakfast, conversations & laundry, all on one corner.
Traveling, it doesn't get much better than that.
Learned that the commercialization of the French Market was hard on local businessmen and residents as they changed the parking rules and phased out the fresh vegetables.
Learned that the police cars carry Digital Transmission Units that send and accept strong RF signals that are anathema to radio mics.
That Floris stopped counting how many years she's had The Washing Well LaunDRYteria at fifty-five, and that she found Clint Eastwood unprepossessed. She picks up and delivers if you need it, all the way to Charles.
The Clover Diner is classic but with a waiter queen floor show; corner of Bourbon & Dumaine.

Tip for Travelers :: Decent Hotel Coffee
When you stay at hotels equipped with little coffee makers in the rooms, use two pods in the bin and fill the pot with a bit more water than called for. In this way, one is able to make a passable cup of coffee despite the circumstances.
