Nokia N96 Test :: Ongoing :: Light :: Flares :: Shadow

.:. Faux Press .:.

The media uploaded here is the raw footage, downloaded from the hereafter mentioned Ovi site, for comparison's sake.

_____

The following is Ovi's flash compression of the same file:

The N96 is not bad at all capturing shafts of light, flares & shadow.

This video was uploaded to Nokia's Ovi sills and video sharing host. This is Ovi's html code for the media file that links to the video hosted @ Ovi's site:

12/21/2008 - Share on Ovi

Fair warning: Don't try to post to your blog directly from Ovi using an email address, because all the email addresses appear in the resultant post, including what should be your very private post-to-blog email addy. Oops.

An Ovi downside is that only the owner of the media posted has the option to download it in its mp4 format, and then, only with a script rather than the preferable direct URL. Perhaps there's a setting to permit any / all / or some to download, but it's not immediately apparent. Neither is the media's license immediately apparent. No copyright or creative commons license option at all as far as I can see. Probably buried in the terms of service. Not good enough.

Ovi should check out Blip.TV for best practices in IP regard.

The Nokia N96 and wide angle lens.

Phil Campbell's at it again:

Your not going to believe this but i found a wide angle lens that you can put on your mobile phone that gives you trippy/drunk o vision when using. The quality of the product is of course very bad so do not expect great optics from this thing. What is does give you thou is a great viewport for live streaming at an event with a lot of people in.The Nokia N96 and wide angle lens., Dec 2008

Googled the device and came up with this collection: HERE. Which will work with the N96, or 8525, and/or the Flip Mino HD?

Ovi v. Blip :: N96's Native Media Hosting

Nokia's 'native' video / still image upload client - that accepts larger-sized files - is Ovi, and this is their embed:

Only the owner of the media has access to direct download links to the files, and even then, it's some kind of script and not a direct URL. Rats. So I can't add a Quicktime enclosure for my RSS feed using Ovi.

Downloaded Qik's 3gp video file and uploaded it to Blip. (Can't seem to Bluetooth videos from the phone to the computer, no matter what I try.) Here's Blip's player embeded:

POST NOTE:

And here's the raw mp4 file uploaded to Blip.TV and transcoded to Flash there:

Much, much better, no?

Posting to Utterli via the Nokia N96

Mobile post sent by TheFauxPress using Utterli. reply-count Replies. mp3

Yes indeedy, it can be done.

Added my utterli email address to the N96 contacts list and somehow, when I asked the phone to send Utterli a message, it asked me if I wanted to record audio.

Does a drunk want a drink?

Well...yeah!

Here it is.

Sweet.

Unfortunately, Shozu doesn't yet have an application that's N96 ready, so I'm still trying to figure out how to get good-quality (> 300kb) videos to upload & auto-post here.

Nokia's out-of-the-box Ovi seems to work. More on that later.

Qik Live Stream Player :: N96 Field Test

It's here!

Nokia's N96 finally arrived, with help from my helpful neighbors who sign for my stuff from the lazy delivery guy who doesn't wanna schlep up a flight of steps and sometimes forget to deliver.

The increased quality of cellphone video will make a huge difference in what creators can imagine doing with these always-on, always-handy devices.

I'm soooooo interested in making a feature film using only cell phone video.

Need a writer, thank you very much.

In the meantime, can me and my pals produce a cellphone-based short film with Nokia's vine application? In three weeks? Dunno. ViNe keeps hanging up in Firefox. :( Have yet to install the application on the phone.

Soon.

Failing interest in a short film, a few interviews anyway.

POST NOTE:

This email-to-blog actually posted 3 times -- both here and at Flickr -- and disturbingly, published the email address to which it was sent. Harrumph. The Ovi site's been down for the last couple days. Hope fixing that may be why.

I like how the picture posts - the default rounded corners and border is appealing. As of now, Flickr does stills better. Shozu does video better.

N96 Back Kickstand for Easily Viewing Movies

My hope is that someone will come up with a way to attach a tripod / monopod at this intersection. Now THAT would be sweet since hand-held shots tend to wobble more than we'd like.

Now, for a backpack-sized monopod...

Grace Piper's Fearless Cooking N96 Beta

Here's Grace Piper's Qik player, to which she's narrowcasting live with her own Beta-test N96.

Last night I watched a movie in one tab, with Grace's Qik page open in another.

Soon began to hear laughter & voices obviously not part of the movie.

Startled, I jumped & became briefly nervous, wondering where in heaven's name the voices were coming from, but soon realized it was only Grace & friends; with a Qik page open, live broadcasts automatically update and come through. Inadvertently followed Grace throughout her Thanksgiving Eve shenanigans. Fun stuff.

Have long lamented being unable to broadcast live with AT&T's 8525, and to the end of ending said lamentation, have often checked with Qik's 'Supported Phones' page, where they've just recently begun to delve into software for pocket pc's and smart phones. With the arrival of my own Beta N96, I shall have a chance to see how this amazing application can work.
